Previously ‘Track of the Day’ ran down a chart of the ‘Top 300 Jazz Artists’ as determined on ‘Rate Your Music’. The new theme is ‘artists that didn’t make the charts’.
This Back Door playing live.

So sad to hear of the passing of British Saxophonist Barbara Thomson MBE after suffering from Parkinson’s disease for 25 years, outliving her husband John Hiseman. They both featured in a BBC documentary cataloguing her disease. www.youtube.com/watch?v=WIVKYkvhUXgThis is her at her best.

Next in the list of ‘artists that didn’t make the charts’ is renowned singer Bessie Smith.
I wonder perhaps if she didn't make it because she wasn't considered to be Jazz. When she is backed by great artists such as (here) Joe Smith and Fletcher Henderson, then it would be wrong to classify her as otherwise.

This is the only known film of Bessie Smith. The full film is here. The backing chorus is a bit disconcerting but her powerful voice overcomes it all.

Some Bessie Smith numbers are risqué and some are just pornographic. This is one of the latter.
"He poured my first cabbage and he made it awful hot
When he put in the bacon it overflowed the pot."
There is a pause in the middle of this recording as there is swap between the two sides of the disc.
