Previously ‘Track of the Day’ ran down a chart of the ‘Top 300 Jazz Artists’ as determined on ‘Rate Your Music’. The new theme is ‘artists that didn’t make the charts’.
Here is another risqué song from Bessie featuring Eddie Lang the white guitar player and Clarence Williams a black pianist in 1929!!

It is difficult to know when to stop with Bessie Smith she has so many good tracks. This is a classic.

This is Bessie Smith’s 1927 cover of Alexander’s Ragtime Band.
The backing includes Joe Smith, Coleman Hawkins and Fletcher Henderson. The song first published by Irving Berlin in 1911 was not without controversy. It is a march as opposed to a rag and contains little syncopation. Scott Joplin alleged that Irving plagiarized the melody from his work.

Sad to hear of the death of British Jazz singer Edana Minghella
Dr Minghella worked for many years in the mental health sector and was an advocate for improving early dementia diagnosis.
This is a great performance.

A last track from Bessie Smith. She has such a great repertoire that she might merit a second visit sometime.

Next in the list of ‘artists that didn’t make the charts’ is Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer. I have seen him perform twice and he is great.
Here he is with Sly and Robbie.

Following the announcement of this year's Mercury prize nominees, I thought we should divert for a day to listen to one of the shortlisted albums.

This is a tribute track to American pianist Sidney Kirk. Considered one of Memphis’ best jazz and R&B musicians, he was a key member of The Isaac Hayes Movement.
I Love this track!
