Today, the BBC are celebrating 50 years of Radio 1 and they have a 'Vintage Radio' featuring old programmes here. Sadly, none of the programmes feature Mike Raven even though he broadcast on the first day of Radio 1. I'm not sure how much I knew about blues before Mike Raven came along but I certainly learnt a lot from him. (Though credit must also been given to Marble Arch Records and the Music section of the local library.) When his programme was extended to 2 hours I seem to recall that the second part was devoted almost entirely to pre-war country blues. It was here I that I first learnt about jug bands and Robert Johnson. Fortunately, YouTube allows us to sample his style here. Wikipedia tells us that he had a highly diverse life which ranged from sheep farmer to horror film actor and that he now lies in a grave that he dug for himself on Bodmin Moor.
