Previously ‘Track of the Day’ ran down a chart of the ‘Top 300 Jazz Artists’ as determined on ‘Rate Your Music’. The new theme is ‘artists that didn’t make the charts’.
After that long run of obituary tracks, 'Track of the Day' can revert back to its consideration of Stan Tracey.

This is a tribute track for American trumpeter and band leader Ted Butterman. Based in Chicago he was probably best known for his years leading the Chicago Cubs Dixieland jazz band.

I am going to stretch the rules slightly here. Next in the list of ‘artists that didn’t make the charts’ is American composer Scott Joplin.
Let's start with one of his most famous compositions.

There are no direct recordings of Scott Joplin, but this is a piano roll that he recorded.

Here he plays with a late stage line-up of Nucleus.

So sad to hear of the death of American pianist Ramsey Lewis aged 87. Renowned for his funky ‘soul Jazz’, he was as famous for his backing groups as he was in his own right. Isaac Young and Eldee Holt left him in 1966 to form Young-Holt Unlimited and one of their replacements Maurice White went on to form Earth Wind and Fire. I had Ramsey down in my future list as an ‘artist who didn’t make the charts’. We will consider him in more detail later.
