Members gave their commentary on their jazz choices as follows.
Richard I
“As usual, I came across this on Spotify. I really enjoy "jazzed up" classical music. I am afraid the YouTube video is of poor quality.”
“Hearing two masters at work is always a joy.”
Cynthia K
“I came across this recently when I heard it on the radio. I had never knowingly heard it before and found it compelling and of course wonderfully played.”
“This seems to be a newly formed young band I really enjoyed listening to them.”
Terry J
“There are a few Jazz live performances that have made their way into Jazz history and this is one of them.”
“Since receiving the requests for this session, sadly, the death of Chick Corea has been announced, so I thought I should choose a track of his. Some of his work is very cerebral and some is hardcore Jazz Rock. Of the tracks available on YouTube, I hope this one hits the sweet spot.”
Additionally Non-Jazz Tracks were played as follows.U3A Member | Track Played | Artist | Album Title - where Applicable | John B | On the Road Again | Canned Heat | (YouTube) (Also YouTube) | Richard I | Mountbatten Festival of Music 2017
| Royal Marines and Top Secret Drum Corps.
| (YouTube) | Cynthia K | It was a Lover and his Lass | Ken 'Snakehips' Johnson and his West Indian Orchestra
| (YouTube) | Gordon R | Beethoven's Jazz (Piano Sonata No. 32, op. 111)
| Ntora Mpakopoulou
| (YouTube) | Terry J | At Last | Etta James | (YouTube) | Also Selected | Baby Love | The Supremes | (YouTube) |
'Baby Love' was played in response to the sad news that Mary Wilson of the Supremes had died.
Members gave their commentary on their non-jazz choices as follows.
Richard I
“My wife and I came across the TopSecret Drum Corps at the Edinburgh Festival when we went up to Scotland to see my son who was working there at the time. This video showing them playing with the Royal Marines sheer bliss.”
Cynthia K
“I really enjoyed this version of the Shakespeare song, appropriate for Valentine's Day!”
Terry J
The recent presidential inauguration reminded me of Obama’s biggest blunder. On his first day in office, he and Michelle danced to ‘At Last’ sung live by Beyoncé. She had only become associated with the song because she played Etta James in the film ‘Cadillac Records’. Sadly, Etta missed out on a moment that should have been the climax of her career.
