Notes
The information recorded above has been presented in a format which maintains continuity with previous months. Members' commentary on their selections and their choice of non-jazz track has been recorded separately on the website. The following musicians have died since the last meeting: saxophonist Giuseppi Logan, bassist Henry Grimes and saxophonist Bootsie Barnes. Anyone who has the time to watch an online Jazz concert can't do better than to watch "Jazz at the White House". Recorded on April 29th 2016, it is a poignant reminder of times past, with a stellar line up.

Members can gave commentary on their jazz choices as follows. Richard I“Hiromi started learning classical piano at the age of six, and was later introduced to jazz by her piano teacher Noriko Hikida. At 14, she played with the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. When she was 17, she met Chick Corea by chance in Tokyo and was invited to play with him at his concert the next day." “As I have been reading a book of random musings by Humphrey Lyttelton - I thought I would find something by him. I found two interesting clips.” Cynthia K“Roan Kearsey-Lawson is a local musician and plays percussion and vibes. He also leads a small band for a jazz club he formed some years ago, called The 144 Club. Under normal circumstances it meets monthly at the Bridgewood Manor Hotel.” “High Society by Sidney Bechet is a class track and still good.” Terry J“I hope no one is offended by this Bessie Smith song. Apologies in advance to any vegetarians who may find the references to sausages unacceptable. Eddie Lang plays the guitar.” “'My Favourite Things' by John Coltrane is not as well known as the Julie Andrew's version but is more deserving of recognition. This track was chosen because of the recent death of McCoy Tyner. Whatever you may think of Coltrane’s riffing in the second part of the recording, Tyner’s piano playing is absolutely commanding in the first half. Additionally Non-Jazz Tracks were played as follows.U3A Member | Track Played | Artist | Album Title - where Applicable | Richard I | Karelia Suite | The Nice | (YouTube)
| Cynthia K | Ball and Chain | Big Mama Thornton | (YouTube) | John B | Wuthering Heights | The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain | (YouTube) | Terry J | Run Free | Si Cranstoun | (YouTube) |

Members can gave commentary on their non-jazz choices as follows.
Richard I“The Nice were an English progressive rock band active in the late 1960s. They blended rock, jazz and classical music and were keyboardist Keith Emerson's first commercially successful band. The group was formed in 1967 by Emerson, Lee Jackson, David O'List and Ian Hague to back soul singer P.P.Arnold. After replacing Hague with Brian Davison, the group set out on their own, quickly developing a strong live following. The group's stage performances featured Emerson's Hammond organ showmanship and abuse of the instrument, such as playing rhythms while switching the reverb on and off while the spring unit was crashing about. Their compositions included radical rearrangements of classical music themes and Bob Dylan songs.” Cynthia K“Janis Joplin also did a version of Ball and Chain but it sounds nothing like this one.” Terry J“I have two, now redundant, tickets to see Si Cranstoun in the next few days for what would have been the eighth time. He is down to play his annual gig at St. George Hotel, Rochester, on Saturday 17th Oct 2020, so here’s hoping. He has a similar standing to that enjoyed by Geno Washington in the sixties. Check out his brilliant cover of Nat King Cole’s ‘Let There be Love’. Here he sings one of his own compositions.
