The 'Track of the Day' is currently running down a list of the of the 'Top 300 Jazz Artists' rateyourmusic.com/list/noname219/top_300_jazz_artists/3/ . The list is based upon the number of entries and positions that an artist has achieved in a published list of most popular Jazz albums. Because it based upon album popularity, there is necessarily a bias towards more recent artists. Louis Armstrong may have sold umpteen different 'Greatest Hits' album but unless one or more particular 'Greatest Hits' album is rated, then none of them count towards his standing in the 'Top 300 Jazz Artists'. Despite this limitation, it is an interesting list that is worth exploring. I missed 'Track of the Day' yesterday due to my first visit to London in 18 months. Tomorrow will also be very busy, so today I will complete the run of Cannonball Adderley music with three tracks. I have been amazed by the depth and range of Cannonball's music.

An unusual departure today as we recognise the death of American Jazz expert Phil Schaap by selecting 3 of his lectures. There are plenty more if you find these interesting.

It took me a while to realise that this track doesn't start with a period of silence. The bird song is part of the recording and not from the garden.

This is an uncharacteristically quiet track from the Mahavishnu Orchestra.

I was walking past a vintage clothes shop recently when I heard a track which fitted perfectly with their ambience. I was able to identify the track courtesy of the Shazam app on my phone and I thought I would post it here before continuing with the chart rundown.

This track is by the Mexican Jazz drummer and composer Tino Contreas, who died recently. It is a great cover of an Ellington classic!

These are tribute tracks to American bluesman Warner Williams who died this week at the age of 91.
He was a member of 'Little Bit A Blues' American folk and blues trio comprising Warner Williams, Jay Summerour and Eric Selby. They played at numerous folk and blues festivals and at concerts at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and were known for playing in the Piedmont blues style, a regional variant of the blues that developed in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia.
The last of the 3 tracks is sadly appropriate.

Sadly, we must again postpone our chart rundown to report a death. This time it is Jazz drummer Colin Bailey who was born in Swindon, UK. Would you believe it he played with Miles Davis!! There doesn't seem to be any recording for this; he played with Miles as a substitute for Tony Williams when Tony was too young to play the clubs. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Bailey_(drummer)

At 13 in the Charts is American Saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. He has a great back catalogue, but lets us start by reacquainting ourselves with what will surely prove to be the Jazz album of the year for 2021.
