Rather sad, I know, but I thought it would perhaps be of interest to have a link to a jazz performers' obituary site so that we can pay due musical and historical homage during our meetings. On that basis, here is the link: www.legacy.com/memorial-sites/jazz/The first recipient for consideration for 2016 is Canadian pianist Paul Bley who sadly passed away on 3rd January. If anybody has a suitable piece of Paul Bley music for the January meeting, it would be nice to share it. R.

Larry Coryell died on February 19. He was known as a pioneering Jazz Fusion guitarist and was a member of the classic Gary Burton quartet which also featured Roy Haynes and Steve Swallow. He recorded many albums in his own name and made vital contributions to a number of landmark albums. In particular with Gary Burton he played on the albums ‘Duster’, ‘Lofty Fake Anagram’ and a ‘Genuine Tong Funeral', with Herbie Mann he played on the album ‘Memphis Underground’ and with Carla Bley he played on the first album by the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra.

Today is the anniversary of Allan Holdsworth’s death, one of the most innovative guitarists on the planet and a beautiful soul. He much preferred talking about anything else than music, especially beer. I was lucky to have seen him live over the years. I met him briefly after a gig and got his photo and autograph in January 2017 at NAMM. Here is one of his most well known tunes, Fred, played live at Yoshi’s, recorded for Blues For Tony, which I was lucky to attend. youtu.be/PzW3yzxc7TY
