I couldn't resist a slice of December cheese for today's track - just to get us into (out of) the mood for Christmas which is now fast approaching!! Here are La Locomotora Negra with that well known flavourite in big band style, Sleigh Ride: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Zt-xEBjWP8

Today's musical fun comes in the form of bassist Major "Mule" Holley: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_HolleyA contemporary of Slam Stewart, he adopted a similar method of applying a vocal accompaniment to his excellent bass playing. Here, we find him performing on a recording of one of his most highly regarded tunes/songs "Angel Eyes" www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uyfb1JuhdOI

I am now back in the UK but whilst in North Carolina I went to a great concert by Kamasi Washington. The two drummers in the group gave the performance great momentum and a continuous rumble of background restlessness. Interestingly his Dad played in the group ("the man who taught me everything"). One track he played on the night was 'Truth', here is an earlier performance of the same. www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXw36xvu_4k

Interesting to thnk that today's track would, these days, be considered Left Field, what would have been thought of it in its release year of 1961? The album iin question is Sun Ra's "The Futuristic Sounds of Sun Ra" Our chosen track is entitled "Bassism" www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeAD-y6KFAU

Here's the great BB King singing 'Guess Who'. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yv-ECx8nSyII saw him play a number of times in his later years. At the first concert he had a twenty piece band with three drummers and encored with a twenty minute version of 'Love Comes to Town'. At the last concert he was down to about six players and memorably sang 'Dust my Grave when I am Gone'. BB King used his limitations to his advantage. He couldn't sing and play at the same time so he invented the guitar solo (much copied British Blues artists). He couldn't play slide guitar so he invented his own distinctive vibrato style. Members of U3A can learn one live lesson from BB. If you don't wish to work into your eighties, then don't have a gambling habit!

A belated Happy New Year to all. Following the seasonal festivities and ensuing internet connection woes (that still continue!), which serve to explain my absence of late, I am pleased to be back. Good to see Terry has been supplying some great music during my hiatus. Today, I offer a brief (1/2 hour) presentation relating to Django Reinhardt - some of which is well known and some outstanding facts that were unknown (to me at least). However, you will be glad to hear that it is not all factual information, as there are some excellent Django performances along the way. I hope you enjoy it. jazzhotbigstep.com/DJANGO/DJANGO%20REINHARDT%201A.mp3and if you fancy Part 2 on this less than sunny day, here it is: jazzhotbigstep.com/DJANGO/DJANGO%20REINHARDT%201B.mp3
