Thanks to RichardD for unearthing three separate websites each an extensive archive of information and recordings from the early years of Jazz. They are as follows. Jazz Rhythm The Red Hot Jazz Archive Martin’s 78 Turntable The websites provide an abundance of free downloads. If you are interested only in early Jazz, then you might not ever need to buy music again. It is unclear quite why this is legal, but the websites have existed for a long time and the powers-that-be have tolerated them, so it must be OK. The posts which follow give guides to each of the three websites.

Jazz Rhythm is an exploration of the lore, culture and personalities of early jazz, presenting Jumping Swing, Classic Blues and Hot Jazz: Old and New It has won a number of broadcast awards. On its pages you’ll hear the music and meet the colourful characters who shaped and defined America’s most original art form,1900-1950: • turn-of-the-century New Orleans • Classic Jazz of the Twenties • Thirties Swing • the best of the Big Bands • Traditional and Revival jazz. Its interface is a little quirky. In particular if you select the ‘accessible version’ and click a link, then you may have to travel a long way down the page to find the content that you have just selected. The left hand side of the home page provides links to a range of artists and Jazz topics. RichardD has suggested that you might like to click the link for Jabbo Smith who was an overlooked Jazz pioneer. The link brings up a set of podcasts covering Smith's career, plus there is written biographical material and links to recordings of his performances. If you click on an audio link then you can listen directly to recorded material but you are also offered the option to download the audio file.

The Red Hot Jazz Archive
provides a history of Jazz before 1930. The first page offers a brief introduction to early Jazz with links to other material. At the bottom of the page there are links to essays on Jazz and links to musical recordings indexed by bands or by musicians. There is also a link to a (very limited) number of film clips. It doesn't seem possible to listen to music directly from the site. Instead recordings are downloaded when selected. These are coded in the Real Audio format rather than the more usual MPeg3 (mp3) format.

Martin’s 78 Turntable
offers hot tunes from the Jazz age. As suggested by the name of the website, the emphasis here is on recorded music. You may need to explore a little to uncover all of the links to all of the available material. If you click on an audio link then you can listen directly to recorded material but you are also offered the option to download the audio file.
